Common murre

Biology

The common murre spends most of the year at sea. In the summer, the breeding season, thousands of these murres head to the cliffs, where each pair lays a single egg. By acquiring a plumage that allows them to survive in the sea, and at night to avoid predators, the chicks bravely jump the cliff into the sea and it is there where they complete their growth, carefully escorted by their father.

Curiosities

This species can stay under water for more than two minutes and dive up to 60 metres deep.
