Azores damselfish

Biology

This damselfish occurs in the tidal zone, on rocky bottoms of the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. It is often found in large schools with males, females and juveniles, except in the summer, its breeding season. During this period, the males acquire a violet colouration, protect the nests and take care of the eggs, which are deposited on a rock.

Conservation

The Atlantic is the second largest ocean, but has a coast line four times bigger than the Pacific’s. It originates in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and is split by the equator into the Northern Atlantic and the Southern Atlantic. Due to its system of surface currents, the climate is variable along its range.

Curiosities

Like all members of the genus Chromis, it has a small mouth that protrudes slightly, with flexible teeth.
