Bluecheek butterflyfish

Biology

The bluecheek butterflyfish lives in pairs or small groups in coral rich areas. It has spines on its pelvic fins which work as tactile receptors. The pectoral fin allows it to jump out of the water to capture floating insects.

Conservation

Corals are not only the main food source for these fishes but also its natural habitat. Thus, the bluecheek butterflyfish is threatened by the destruction and loss of corals. However, populations have been stable.

Curiosities

It spends several hours motionless amongst branching corals, and is more active by the end of the day.
