Boar fish

Biology

The boar fish is very easy to identify; it has very prominent eyes that contrast with its small head. It has a protractile mouth, that forms a short tube when extended. The species lives on rocky bottoms up to 700 meters, where it forms dense schools. Juveniles might prefer shallow waters close to the coast where they can feed on small crustaceans and mollusks.

Curiosities

During breeding season, the differences between males and females are striking; the male's body is covered with darker lines and the fins become red, while the female is orange and has silver fins with dark orange tips.
