Dusky grouper

Biology

The dusky grouper is an emblematic inhabitant of the rocky zones of the Azores and Madeira, approaching divers without fear. Therefore, for years it was victim of intense spearfishing and currently is included in the list of endangered species in Portugal. This species is solitary and territorial. When threatened, the males exhibit a darker colour with light bands on the head.

Conservation

Overexploitation from commercial fishing is the primary threat. The slow growth rate and the complex reproductive style of this species reduce its ability to withstand high fishing pressure.

Curiosities

The dusky grouper reaches sexual maturity at five years old. All individuals are born females. At the age of ten, they change sex to males. This species can reach 50 years old.
