Garibaldi

Biology

The garibaldi inhabits rocky bottoms, near crevices and small caves. There this fish swims amongst kelp forests, critical to its survival, as they provide protection from predators, are a source of food, and are important for reproductive success. During the breeding season, the male invests a great deal of time preparing algae nests. To attract females, it swims around the nest while emitting a noise by grinding its pharyngeal teeth.

Conservation

This is a protected species in California, where laws now protect the fish and prohibits taking it, either for sport or for commercial purposes

Curiosities

This fish owes its common name, garibaldi, to the 19th century Italian leader of the same name whose famous army wore flashy red and orange colours into battle.
