Gilthead seabream

Biology

The gilthead seabream inhabits seagrass prairies and sandy bottoms, along the coast and rarely below 30 metres deep, where it feeds on crustaceans, fish and, its favourite, mussels.

Curiosities

It is hermaphroditic because at about three years of age males can convert into females. The gilthead seabream is a solitary fish but can be seen in small groups and takes its name from the golden colour of the line that it has between the eyes.
