Kelp surfperch

Biology

The favourite habitat of this species of surfperch is the giant kelp forests at depths of 30 metres. There the kelp surfperch swims in large groups during the summer and finds its food source: small crustaceans.

Conservation

Its favourite habitat is composed of brown algae that dominate nutrient-rich areas and cold temperate places, and which shelter a wide variety of organisms that are looking for food and protection. These forests are dominated by the giant kelp, the largest of the kelps.

Curiosities

This perch is known to be a cleaner fish, picking external parasites from other fishes; like other species of perch, it is also viviparous, meaning that females carry the developing young.
