Lined surgeonfish
Biology
The lined surgeonfish is a very territorial and extremely aggressive fish that inhabits coral reefs exposed to wave action. Adults lead large harems of females even though juveniles are solitary and very cautious. Near the caudal fin it has two strong and sharp spines associated with poisonous glands. This fish can live up to 42 years.
Conservation
These fish inhabit the world’s largest coral reef: the Great Barrier Reef. This biological structure is composed of millions of small living organisms called coral polyps.
Curiosities
Males and females are only distinguished by the strong courtship colours that the males exhibit during mating season.
