Zebra moray

Biology

This moray owes its name to the beautiful pattern of yellow and black stripes that covers its body, which can reach up to 150 centimetres. It lives in cracks and overhangs of reefs at depths up to 20 meters. Here, it feeds at night and surprises its prey (crabs and mollusks) with fast and effective attacks. It also eats sea urchins, crushing their shells with its strong teeth.

Curiosities

Although they may appear threatening, their mouth remains open so they can force water over their gills to breathe.
