Galaxy coral

Biology

The galaxy coral can form colonies of large dimensions, sometimes more than 5 metres. During the day, the polyps are projected outwards and their white extremities are clearly visible. This, along with the predominantly dark colour of the colony, gives it its name. It is common along the reef, particularly in areas sheltered from the destructive action of waves.

Conservation

Coral reefs around the world are in danger. The major threat to corals is global climate change, high temperatures and ocean acidification. Localized threats to corals include fisheries, invasive species, dynamite fishing, chemical fishing, pollution, sedimentation, and human recreation and tourism activities.

Curiosities

Some research strongly suggests that this species displays cito-toxic and anti-carcinogenic properties in its mucous.
