Giant green anemone

Biology

The green giant anemone is a solitary species that inhabits rocks from the intertidal zone up to 30 metres depth. It is because of the presence of microscopic algae in its tissues that this anemone has its green colour, whose intensity is light-dependent. In its tentacles this species has venomous structures – the nematocysts – which are used to paralyse and capture prey, as well as to protect its territory.

Curiosities

The green giant anemone may retract its tentacles and cover itself with stones and shells during low tide in order to avoid drying out.
