Giant plumose anemone

Biology

With an elongated column topped with a plumose crown with almost 1000 tentacles, plumose anemones form vast colonies. In this colonies, all anemones descend from the first, through asexual reproduction, being clones of each other. When environmental conditions favour dispersion, they will reproduce by sexual reproduction. Juveniles have been found to increase the diameter of their bases up to one centimetre per day. It feeds on plankton and it has been seen feeding on moon jellyfish.

Curiosities

When formed through sexual reproduction, all plumose anemones are born male and at some point in their lifespan change sex to female.
