Fishtail palm

Biology

This palm tree owes its name to the shapes of its leaves. Unlike other species of palm trees, this one does not die after flowering and fructification, which, curiously, emerges from the top and moves downwards over the course of the year. The flowers appear in threes: one female between two male flowers. The red fruits hide a toxic compound that cause severe pain in the mouth and, in contact with skin and eyes, causes severe burns.

Curiosities

The fishtail palm forms paradisiacal landscapes in tropical forests.
