Lady palm

Biology

The lady palm is a slow-growing palm that can reach four metres in height. It is composed of several thin trunks, similar to bamboo, and coated with thick fibres. Like many other palms, this one is also dioecious, producing male and female flowers in different plants. Inflorescences are branched and composed of little yellow flowers. This produces oval white fruits.

Conservation

This palm is not tolerant to low temperatures and ice, but requires high levels of air moisture.

Curiosities

The Japanese peoples were the first to use the lady palm as ornamental plant. They used to harvest individual plants in China and bring them back to Japan to decorate the Imperial Palace.
