Shell ginger

Biology

The shell ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant from the same family of the ginger that can reach about three metres in height. Its leaves are aromatic, long, wide and shiny, and are widely used as herbal tea and in oriental cuisine. The pinkish and white flowers bloom in the summer and release a smooth scent. Its fruit is globose and capsule-shaped.

Curiosities

Alpinia zerumbet is called a "shell ginger" most commonly because its individual pink flowers resemble sea shells.
